All network traffic conducted by Tails is automatically routed through the Tor network, which anonymizes the connection by redirecting data through various servers around the world. The system includes various tools aimed at digital security, such as the Tor Browser, an email client with encryption support (Thunderbird with Enigmail), KeePassXC password manager, and the OnionShare app for anonymous file sharing. It also features utilities for editing documents, images, and multimedia, ensuring functionality without compromising privacy.

One of the most important characteristics of Tails is the use of the "amnesia" mode: all session information is automatically erased when the system is shut down. This means that no browsing history, temporary files, or passwords remain saved on the computer, protecting against unauthorized access.

For situations where it is necessary to retain certain files or settings, the system allows the creation of an encrypted "persistent storage" on the USB drive itself. This optional space is password-protected and can store data such as GPG keys, bookmarks, documents, or custom settings.
